Suzy May Ockenden was a 3rd generation to be born and bred in Thorpdale. Daughter to Les and Janet Rowlings. She was diagnosed at 41 with primary breast cancer that went undetected, it was the secondary in the bone that was found first due to soreness in her hip and was given 18 months to live. She defied the odds and survived 12 long happy years. Suzy believed being part of the small community of Thorpdale surrounded by family and friends was a big part of her healing process. Her survival philosophy was always positive, she considered herself “lucky” and “lucky on a number of levels” as she wrote in a book outlining her journey with cancer. “I am certainly lucky to have the family that I have; fortunate to live in a small community; and lucky to have been given a wakeup call about what is important in life.” As a career orientated woman her job as a teacher took her to Mount Beauty where she met and later married Pete. After giving birth to her first child, Emma, they moved back to Thorpdale and later had their second child Dale. She continued to work as a teacher at TAFE before her career change to a personal assistant to the CEO of and engineering company. After her diagnosis Suzy’s life changed dramatically to reflect what she held important in her life, her family, friends and community. Her positive attitude and strong will, will be remember forever. She is a sorely missed member of our family and of the community of Thorpdale, but her legacy will live on through us (Dale and Emma) and Pete her husband.
